Hydrogen Sulfide (H₂S) is a dense, colourless gas produced in industrial operations. It has an intense odour at very low levels (ppbv) and can thus be an irritant to people living near facilities (petrochemical) that produce or use this gas.  Applications for which this gas is used include rust protection of iron and steel products and calibration of environmental emissions monitoring equipment. While H₂S  is useful for monitoring other gases, it is essential to also monitor its levels in facilities because H₂S is a poisonous gas that is toxic to workers when inhaled. Even at levels below the toxic threshold the odour can be extremely irritating.  Hydrogen sulfide is also flammable--thus the detection of H₂S sources is necessary for preventing fires.
